EXPERIENCING URBAN SPACE

PEOPLE IN LAVAPIES

HOW PEOPLE ARE INTERACTING IN LAVAPIES

Those two articles are amazing for what i think the project is going to develop into. Each article explains a really inportant theme in the Lavapies district and i think taht we can us it to inform our designs and create a place that is for the people of the Lavapies district.

So well done there Marta! Your a star!

And Joe man im glad you pickked up on the dog walking idea! i think it would be a really good detail for the regenration on the urban space, maybe not somehting that we completly focus on but definatly something to look into!

P.S
Let me know whats your thinking, start a bit of initial designs next weak, star small and build up!

ARCHITECTURE IN SPAIN-

- GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM BY FRANK GEHRY BILBOA /SPAIN

So Bilbao is a big inidustrial center, that formally looked like an industrial center, but has left several rounds of Urban planning and development looking quite posh... sometimes so posh and clean it´s scary. The opening of Frank Gehry's spectacular Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao in 1997 called internatioinal attention to the city, fuelling its development as a tourism destination. The Guggenheim is awesome... the building is beautiful... the most obvious example of architecture as art that I have seen in my life. The giant cat made out of flowers could really spice up any town.

LAVAPIES

http://madridailyphoto.blogspot.com/2006_12_01_archive.html

Still Lavapies, because it is the quarter where life appears more naked. It is a very centric area of Madrid, old part of the city and very special. Inhabited by immigrants and other border's way of life. We can still hear public conversations and also fights at Plaza de Lavapies. Antiheroes of capitalism having supper with Baco.

HOW PEOPLE ARE INTERACTING IN LAVAPIES

SOME QUOTES...

A lawyer from Niger sits on a terrace advising a Pakistani businessman, a Japanese and a Mexican woman discuss their joint activities in an anti-racist movement, and immigrants walk the streets with their Spanish wives and children.

"People tend to stick to their own kind," Thierno says. "Senegalese, for instance, spend their time watching television with other Senegalese in flats rented by Senegalese."

Elderly Spanish residents who have seen the neighbourhood change radically sit on benches in the central square and watch people from all over the world pass by.

Communities.

Hey ladies and gents,

I have been thinking we should try and find out how intermixed the different communities, nationalities ect are in Lavapies. From the videos of the neo nazis ect i think it would be a good idea to find out how well these groups communicate. Because communication could be an area we can look into I think, and trying to pehaps improve communication and community.

it may be a case where we have to just monitor this when we are there i dont know but its defo an area i think i worth looking at. please leave comments on this post with what you think.

Cheers.

"URBAN PROBES"

There is a fair amount of stuff that we can use to aid us with this whole "Urban Probe" thing, Im thinking dictaphones, maybe small maps that people can use to track their journey across the Lavpies area.

Maybe a list of stuff that the local population has concerns about, maybe some urban legends like childrens stories based in Madrid?? I dont know if we can take on that disposible camera idea, or do we think thats cheating? Anyway i think we could also do an orienteering style thing like leaving, i dont know, playing cards all over the Lavapies area and marking down on a map where we put them, then telling a person to collect any they see when they walk around the area so we can track the usual paths people take.

Below is just a small jpeg of my work so far on the built fabric and mapping of the local area, it is fairly difficult to work out exactly what each building is which is why some of the groups are a bit vague, my apologys for that.

I am planning to do another two similar to this. One of an even larger area maybe including all the important historical and contemporary sites for the population of Madrid and another linking the other squares [TERTIARY SITE] to our Primary site.

Oh yeah while i think of it, if anyone finds anything about the madrid festival at the begining of November jsut stick the link or whatever on here!

Tomorrow meeting/ URBAN PROBES!!!

Hi Guys,

I am definitely in tomorrow. I have a lecture in the afternoon- in the morning I am going to spend maybe and hour or two just getting all my information together and trying to get it into some manageable format but then I think whoever is around will be a good idea to get in and have a chat.

Also I spoke with Flo, Stuart etc today and they said that we 100% need to start thinking about our "urban probes". So how are we going to engage with people in the area to get a broader picture of any needs, wants, problems etc so we can work out what we are going to do when we get back be it an installation, product, spacial design. So yeah, start thinking on some ideas of how we can get the people in the area to engage with us without asking specific questions I guess.

Cheers

Joe

Spanish Designers.

Above are some photos I took at a Spanish design exhibition at Milan design week last year. I think they give a good incite into a Spanish aesthetic and style.

All the below images are by El Ultimo Grito. They are a product/ installation/ exhibition/ furniture design company that are actually based in Berlin, and Rosario teaches around London. However they are extremely well respected Spanish designers and when I went to a lecture they gave their Spanish side was clear in the playfulness, humour, and fun they have with their designs and their process, and i like the abstract artisitc qualities and aesthetic.

Some things. transport. sustainable spaces in Madrid

Above Madrid Judicial courts proposal by foster and partners. These are under construction in Madrid and maximise the cities natural light, and potential solar energy. An example of Madrid's movement into cultural and significant arcitechture.

Madrid airport picture above terminal 4- Richard rogers arcitechs. This is a good example from what I can see in the pride that Madrid take in there transport system. From what I have read Madrid is the second most densely populated city in Europe and also is the 4th busiest airport in the world. The Metro system is the second largest and from everything I have read seems to be extremely efficient leading the way with a few other cities. The roof of the airport is constructed from Bamboo ( a renewable resource and extremely fast growing farmed crop).

This is an outdoor vertical garden called Caixa Forum a centre for Social and Cultural Outreach Projects and a place that hosts exhibitions and forums. It is an example of how the arcitecture and planning in Madrid is being aimed to encourage community cohesion and encourage cultural participation. The vertical garden above and the image below are both implementations of greenery and aspects of "the countryside" within a city environment. I feel this is because of a lack of greenery and parkland in the city, which maybe something we come back to later.

Atocha station Madrid is a main station in Madrid and its largest- serving both suburban and more widely accessible trains.
Whether or not these designers are Spanish I think is irrelevant, but I think some of these examples show the pride that Madrid takes in its Transport system but also the cities openness to design and sustainability, and the opportunities to take risks and be creative.
Cheers

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!!!!

Hello Boys and Girls.....

this is the first post of our epic bolg, i think were all meeting tommorrow..........dont know what time though. I dont know if everyone knows but the price has been put up to £307 from £200 pounds. If this effects anyone, or if anyone cant go because of it just let us all know as soon as possible so we can work out can do what.

Also if anyone has any work its would be really good to put it up on this blog even if its just links or excerts from a website just so we can get all our info together, and if we lose anything at least it will still be on here.

Write on here as much as possible i think it would be cool if we had a packed blog and its really easy to do aswell, even if your just writing how you want to draw something or want to discuss an idea!
